Surf’s Up San Gabriel kicks off Summer Nights series with food, games and live music

Kicking off the city’s Summer Nights series, Surf’s Up San Gabriel will bring live music, food trucks, games and activities to the historic Mission District on Thursday, Jun. 8. The free event, which runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., aims to bring community members together to celebrate the start of the summer season under a festive Polynesian-themed block party.

“There’s going to be something for everyone,” said Angelica Frausto-Lupo, Economic Development Manager. “Whether you’re young, or simply young at heart, we’ll be featuring a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy, including carnival games, several food trucks, hula dancers and a live band.”

The free community event, which will occupy Mission Drive from Santa Anita to Broadway, will offer community members the chance to experience live music from The Deb Taren Band, a beer and wine garden, several kids’ games and activities alongside a hula performance from The Dancing Fire. In addition, residents can also enjoy food from several food trucks, including Kogi BBQ, The Wafl Truck, Slammin’ Sliders, Ridges Churro Bar and much, much more.

While residents enjoy food and free activities, they’ll also be treated to a beautiful view of the Mission Playhouse at dusk. “The plaza in front of the Mission Playhouse serves as the perfect setting to host the kickoff of the Summer Nights series,” Frausto-Lupo said, noting that the bulk of the event occurs right in front of the historic theater. “The Playhouse serves as a gorgeous backdrop at night.”

Surf’s Up San Gabriel will initiate a summer long series of community engagement events known as the San Gabriel Summer Nights program. The series, which will run from Jun. 8 to Aug. 10, will feature several concerts and three movies over the span of two and a half months.

Residents who wish to attend Surf’s Up San Gabriel should be advised that Mission Drive will be closed from Santa Anita to Broadway from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Free parking will be provided in and around the Mission District.
