Vincent Lugo Park update: Phase 1 Construction Continues
Phase 1 construction at Vincent Lugo Park is continuing. The park project has taken much longer than anticipated, in part due to the fact that the contractor uncovered extraordinary amounts of concrete rubble under the park surface. This has expanded the areas of excavation for the dry creek bed, pedestrian/vehicle bridges, the outdoor classroom and trenching for electrical and irrigation.
Park features already completed include decomposed granite multipurpose paths, electrical work, construction of the dry stream bed, construction of pedestrian and vehicular bridges, irrigation installation and initial planting.
Project elements yet to be completed include: installation of LED (light emitting diode) pedestrian lights, construction of the outdoor classroom, construction of the main maintenance road (adjacent to the vehicular bridge) and landscape installation, including installation of the athletic field/open space area. Phase 1 is estimated to be completed in early 2012.
Preservation of La Laguna de San Gabriel, aka Monster or Dinosaur Park, has also begun on a separate track from the park construction project. Coordinated by the Friends of La Laguna team, Phase 1 work on La Laguna includes: repair of the dock with replacement of material that match the original. And work on Look Out Mountain. This largest structure in La Laguna will undergo additional structural support and significant repair work. This initial Preservation Phrase is expected to be complete in early 2012.
