We're delighted to offer you the chance to have your own personal story performed onstage as part of the upcoming Asian American Festival, known as APAFEST, scheduled for this May.
In 1996, the U.S. Congress designated May as Asian Pacific Month. This May, we are delighted to present the first ever San Gabriel Mission Playhouse Asian Pacific American Festival to celebrate the artistic and cultural contribution of our community.
Executive Producer Vivian Chan is using some of her seemingly boundless energy to bring a range of wonderful partners into the festival to offer workshops, demonstrations, discussions, film screenings and live performances. We'll be offering workshops in Wushu, Tai-Chi and in Cantonese Opera as well as demonstrations and exhibitions from the Chinese Floral Arts Foundation USA Chapter.
In addition, we're very excited about our "Stories into Performance" project where we collect stories from the community and have professional actors and directors turn three of these stories into short pieces for the stage. These will be performed at the end of the three week festival. Tell us your journey to California from the place that you were born or grew up, or tell us about your family's journey - your parents, your mom or dad, auntie or uncle. Or it could be neighbor, a friend, even someone you just met. What was the journey like, what were the feelings before, during, after…? Positive, negative, heartbreaking or heart-warming, funny, tragic, simple or complicated - we want to hear from you. Just submit your story for a chance to have it turned into a mini-theater piece to be performed on the main stage at the Playhouse at the end of May.
