Community Development Department Shares an Annual Overview

CDD Annual Update

San Gabriel’s Community Development Department provided an annual update at the May 17, 2022 City Council Meeting. In the report, the department shared their latest activities, economic development programs, the city’s housing trends and current and upcoming development projects.

The Community Development Department consists of four divisions:

    Planning

    Building and Safety

    Neighborhood Improvement Services (Code Enforcement)

    Economic Development

These four divisions are responsible for helping the city thrive financially by creating an inviting, safe and vibrant physical environment for all residents, businesses and visitors.

Currently, there are more than 19 development projects that are undergoing the review process or have already begun construction. Below are a few projects that are underway in San Gabriel:

Pacific Square Plaza - 700-800 South San Gabriel Blvd

Featuring 243 residential units and 80,000 square feet of retail space, Pacific Square Plaza will span across an entire city block between East Grand Ave and South El Monte Street. Originally part of the Yoshimura and Uyematsu family’s San Gabriel Nursery, the new plaza will be located south of the nursery store, and will also include an outdoor community space. It is currently under plan review and construction is anticipated to begin this fall.

The Province - 400 West Valley Blvd

Located at the southeast corner of New Ave and Valley Blvd, The Province will feature 127 residential units and 50,500 square feet of retail spaces. The construction of the building started in early 2021 and is anticipated to complete by this fall.

The One - 101 East Valley Blvd

Centered in the heart of the commercial corridor on Valley Blvd at the northeast corner of Del Mar Ave and Valley Blvd, The One will offer 81 residential units built upon 15,000 square feet of commercial space. The One is anticipated to open this Summer.

Aside from development projects, the Community Development Department also oversees the Planning, Design Review, and Historic Preservation & Cultural Resource Commissions. The commissions develop ways to improve infrastructures, plan for its future, and to protect San Gabriel’s unique historical heritage.
