Recently, we have been made aware of concerns regarding the candidates’ name order on this year’s election ballots. Same as past elections, the order of candidate names on ballots is determined by their surnames and the California Secretary of State’s randomized alphabet drawing, according to California Elections Code section 13112. For candidates with multiple, unhyphenated surnames, our City Clerk Department made the interpretation that the order would be determined by the last surname and informed candidates as such. Instead, candidates were listed in order by their first surname on the ballots by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, which was brought to our attention immediately once printed. We regret any confusion caused by an incorrect notice of ballot name order to the candidates and encourage voters to double-check their choices when casting their votes to ensure they are voting for their desired candidates.
