Beginning June 1, the City of San Gabriel will enforce the new ordinance to allow local prosecution of certain quality-of-life crimes. These include aggressive panhandling, trespassing and loitering, unlawful camping, amplified sound, and vandalism. Prior to June 1, offenders of these crimes can only be cited and then released.
We will continue to lean on our robust mix of crime diversion programs as the primary tool to educate and prevent these types of crimes from happening. However, for repeat offenders who do not respond to our prevention efforts, the new ordinance will now provide our public safety team with an additional tool, introducing consequences to prevent repeat offenders from causing further harm to our community.
By allowing the City to prosecute these crimes locally, this will introduce a fair and effective system to help curtail criminal activity affecting our neighborhoods and commercial shopping centers.
