[ARCHIVED] Excessive Heat Watch issued for Monday, Tuesday

heat warning

Locals can expect hot weather early next week, and the San Gabriel Fire Department has encouraged residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their families.

The National Weather Services issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles Basin, Ventura County Coastal and Interior Valleys, Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area and San Fernando Valley for Monday, June 20. The Excessive Heat Watch was also issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura County Mountains and Northern Los Angeles County Mountains for Monday and Tuesday, June 20-21.

Temperatures are expected to reach 100 to 110 degrees, and this intense heat could cause dangerous heat-related illnesses. The risk is higher for sensitive populations such as older adults, people who are working or playing outdoors and those without access to air conditioning. Power outages are possible, as demand for electricity will be high.

Here are some tips to stay cool and healthy:

-Do not leave pets or people in enclosed vehicles, even for a short period of time.
-Take extra precautions if working outside, and reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening when possible.
-Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.
-Know signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
-Schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Heat is an emergency. Those who feel overcome by heat or see someone suffering from heat-related illness should call 911.

There are several cooling centers in the area to find relief from the heat, including the Asian Youth Center at 100 W Clary Ave., in San Gabriel.
