In recent months, officials have seen an increase in coyotes roaming San Gabriel neighborhoods. It is important for residents to take precautions of their own, as there is little the city can do to control these wild animals.

Coyotes are intelligent and adaptable animals. Despite attempts to regulate their numbers throughout the United States, coyote populations have continued to increase.

Primarily nocturnal, coyotes are omnivorous and are attracted to urban neighborhoods because of the abundant food sources such as garbage cans, pet food, birdseed and outdoor pets.

To deter coyotes from your property, consider the following tips:
-Make your trash can inaccessible by keeping lids securely fastened.
-Do not keep pet food outdoors.
-Some deterrents that may keep coyotes from your property include: battery operated flashing lights, tape-recorded human noises and squirting the coyote with a garden hose.

Unless there is an immediate threat to human life, the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society and the City of San Gabriel will not trap, relocate or kill coyotes.
