The Community Services Department celebrated Active Aging Week during the week of Sept. 26-30 with games, activities and giveaways for the city's older adult community.

Active Aging Week, organized by the International Council on Active Aging®, is a national observance showcasing the diverse opportunities available to older adults in a fun and educational atmosphere. This year’s theme was “Explore the Possibilities,” encouraging older adults to try something new.

The week was filled with daily riddles, stress reducing adult coloring pages, a presentation from Pacific Clinics, leg pain assessment from SonoHealthcare Solutions and outdoor activities.

There was also an opportunity for older adults to sample some classes that are offered by the Community Community Services Department for free. A number of participants took part in chair yoga, beginning ballroom dance, tennis and introduction to computers. One lucky winner, Edith Sheu, won a free session of classes.

While Active Aging Week has come to an end, the department encourages all older adults to stay active year round through San Gabriel classes and activities. The Community Services Department will offer open computer use time at the Adult Recreation Center and Pickleball at Smith Park beginning in November.
