Work started in November and installations were completed by the New Year.
Connector Pipe Screens (CPS) units which are installed inside the catch basin prevent trash or debris larger than 5mm from entering the connector pipe which connects to the flood control system. The screen is installed directly in front of the connector pipe and allows only water to enter the pipe. The screens will prevent large debris such as cups and paper from entering the storm drains. This will limit the amount of trash that would otherwise end up in our rivers and the Pacific Ocean. "Only rain down the drain"!
The installation of the units are critical steps to ensure the City's compliance with the regulations set forth by the Los Angeles River Trash Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), as part of guidelines by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).
At this time 58 units were installed; all City owned. The second phase, installation of screens on Los Angeles County owned basin (477 in total) within the City's jurisdiction is in the plan check stage of the project.
