Last week, San Gabriel Police Explorer Omar Villegas helped give a homeless man needed comfort during a cold winter night, in an act of kindness that will be recognized by the City Council at a future meeting.
On Tuesday, January 24, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the San Gabriel Police Department received a call for service complaining about a homeless man who had set up a temporary residence behind a commercial building in the area of Las Tunas Drive and Country Club Drive.
Police Officer Allen Sam and his ride-along partner, Villegas, responded to the call. Upon arrival, Sam and Villegas observed the man with all of his personal belongings behind a building setting up a temporary residence to spend the night. While Sam spoke with the man, he and Villegas noticed that he was not wearing any shoes. At the time of the call, the temperature outside was in the low 50's. Sam asked the man if he had any shoes with him and he said no. Sam felt bad and offered to bring the man a pair of shoes when he returned to work the following week.
Villegas listened to Sam's offer and realized that he and the man had the same shoe size. Villegas removed his uniform work boots and gave them to the man. This selfless gesture left Villegas in only his socks but he felt the man needed the boots more than he did.
