[ARCHIVED] SGPD participates in the Pink Patch Project to support breast cancer research

Pink Patch Project

To support breast cancer research, the San Gabriel Police Department is participating in this year’s Pink Patch Project campaign. Centered on pink versions of the safety officer’s uniform patch, the Pink Patch Project is designed to raise awareness about the fight against breast cancer. “Many of us likely know someone that’s been affected by cancer, if not breast cancer,” Sergeant Christine Nolasco said. “Part of our policing focuses on community outreach, and we think the Pink Patch Project is a good cause.” Nolasco serves as the Pink Patch Project coordinator for the San Gabriel Police Department.

As part of the campaign, participating members of the department will wear pink patches in the month of October as part of their uniform to support City of Hope, a charity that supports cancer treatment and research. “Our officers are supportive of the program, and some are motivated by their experiences with family or friends that have or have had breast cancer,” Nolasco said. “These patches stand out, and they grab people’s attention.” Residents who wish to support the cause can purchase a San Gabriel Police Department pink patch for only $10.

In addition, the police department is also selling challenge coins and shirts in support of the cause. “Many people collect challenge coins, so we thought that’d be a unique way to raise funds. One of our officers also designed a shirt to promote the Pink Patch Project,” Nolasco said. “We raised over $4,500 last year, and we’d like to increase that amount this year.”
