I’m considering purchasing a house but the Assessor has a different square footage than what the realtor has advertised. How do I find the true square footage?
The official record of your home’s square footage is that found in the City’s building permit records. Many times, the square footage listed with the Assessor is the same but not always. Remember, it is the Assessor’s job to determine your property tax based on the square footage of the buildings that exist on the property, not to determine if that square footage was all built with permits. If there is a discrepancy between the City’s and the Assessor’s records, it may be due to unpermitted additions. You may also consider measuring the home, but it is always best to consult with the Building Division for help in determining the true legal square footage of the house.
