1. I am interested in developing a project in San Gabriel, is there someone I can speak with about requirements or potential pitfalls?

The City offers monthly Applicant Review Sessions (ARS) designed to give applicants a chance to meet with lead staff about their projects and to explore multiple paths to success. Discussions will provide clarification on City requirements, raise “red flag” issues, and streamline City approval processes. We want you to come out of ARS knowing what steps are needed to move your project forward smoothly. 2. My permit/business application was denied. Who can I speak to for help?

If you would like an advocate, contact the Economic Development Division. They can seek further clarification of why the decision was made and advise you as to what you can do. You can also appeal the decision or ask for a variance. The Planning Commission meets once a month on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chamber.

A variance is an exception to a zoning restriction which allows use of the land outside the requirements of the zoning for that area. Variances can be given by a locality for businesses that present valid reasons for the variance and who can show that the variance will not lessen property values or interfere with use of the property by current residents.

3. Are there programs for financial assistance through your Redevelopment Agency?

No, these programs have been eliminated due to the economic crisis. California Community Redevelopment Law was amended on June 28, 2011 in order to address the state’s ongoing budget deficit. The legislation effectively dissoled all California redevelopment agencies, prevented RDAs from engaging in new activities and outlined a process for winding down the RDA’s financial affairs.

4. Do you have any programs or financial assistance my business or development can benefit from?

Although the city has been hindered by the dissolution of its Redevelopment Agency, we can waive up to 30% of plan check, permit and inspection fees for qualified projects. To find out if your project qualifies contact City Hall.

The City has also partnered with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to help existing and new businesses by offering free services. These services include assistance with business and marketing plans, financial assistance, internet technologies and more. Yes, there is a chamber of commerce that has regular mixers and events where you can meet and mingle with your peers. There are also many individual businesses groups for specific fields.
